Obituary

Daisy Lou Hatmaker reached the glorious, heavenly gate on September 10, 2023. She was born on January 7, 1928 in the Beech Grove community of Anderson County. Being saved as a child at First Baptist Church, Lake City, TN she often told family and friends she was a “winner either way” in life and death situations. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist attending until her ability changed. Her 95 years were spent loving her brothers and sister, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and helping others in need, even if it was just a phone call to cheer, collect and share recipes, or give advice as needed. She was a faithful employee, beginning her work at the Lake City knitting mill, while attending Coal Creek High School, where she also was a member of the girls' basketball team. Her employment included Y-12 in Oak Ridge, driving a school bus for Daniel Author Rehabilitation Center, an Avon Representative, and an Anderson County Schools' Vocational School teacher assistant in the shop department. Her students still often comment on her kindness. After her retirement she continued her work as a substitute teacher with Anderson County High School. She was instrumental in the successful operation of the Oak Grove Cemetery, which included keeping Bedford, her husband of 68 years, in line. Her summers were spent canning vegetables grown in Bedford's garden. Daisy was very outgoing, and best known for a laugh that will never be forgotten. Her excellent cooking was enjoyed by many, especially by families at Oak Grove gatherings. Her later years found her keeping up with friends on Facebook, visiting with friends and family, and being a big fan of the Lady Vols Basketball team. She was very grateful for her sister in law and friend, Frankie Hatmaker for the kindness and support shown.  One of Daisy's proudest moments was in May, 2023, when she attended her (all years) high school class reunion, where, at 95 years old, she was the oldest graduate in attendance. Daisy is preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Roxie (Branch) Vowell, her infant son, Jerry Hatmaker, her brothers, Kenneth Vowell, JC Vowell, and Leon Vowell, and her niece, Montine Kemp.
