Bertha Sue Hollis

Bertha Sue Hollis, 80, of Clinton, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on September 6th, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Sue was born on March 15th, 1946, in Anderson County, Tennessee, and was raised in Briceville. While attending Lincoln Memorial University, Sue met the love of her life, James Hollis, who she went on to build a family with while she worked as a legal secretary. She was also a lifelong member of the Laurel Branch Baptist Church.

Sue had a creative spirit, enjoying arts and crafts, wreath-making, and decorating. She also loved baking and making desserts, chocolates, and candies. During the holidays, her home was filled with the comforting scents of vanilla, cinnamon, and chocolate. Whether creating something decorative or preparing something sweet, Sue found enjoyment in putting her creativity to work.

Among the most meaningful parts of Sue’s life was helping to raise generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sue embodied what it meant to care for, cultivate, and nurture a family. Known as “Mawmaw” to her children, Sue created a home filled with love and joy. Through the time, care, and love she gave, she helped shape a family that will carry her memory forward for generations to come.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, James Hollis; her parents, Claude Taylor and wife Bertha Patterson Taylor.

Sue is survived by her children, Bethany Culver (Greg) and Thomas Hollis (Carolyn); her grandchildren, David Merrick (Julie), Cory Merrick, Megan Hollis Wells (Tristin), and Morgan Merrick; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Landan Hatfield, Carons Merrick, Ava Ayers, Case Wells, Emma Claire Wells.

Family and friends are invited to attend a burial service at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8th, 2026, at Norris Memorial Gardens.

Sue’s legacy lives on in the family she helped raise and in the love that will carry her memory from one generation to the next.
